Calling all curly haired humans! If you have curly hair, you know the difficulty of trying to care of it. The concept of getting up and walking out of the house just isn’t an option. With that being said, we want to be able to give you the right tips to make sure the curls stay bouncy no matter what.
Where Do We Start?
Now, we aren’t professionals so don’t take what we say and run with it, BUT we do know a thing or two about keeping our curly healthy. Not only is it difficult to manage but there’s almost a feeling of dread when it comes to trying to make sure it looks decent enough to walk out of the house. There’s almost an invisible line between good hair days and a lion’s mane on top of your head so trust us, we understand.
The good thing is that when you get the hang of how your hair works, having curly hair will be your favorite thing. Taking care of your hair the right way and even just using the right hairstyles can elevate your hair game.
- Only Wash When Needed
If you’re one of those people that wash their hair every single day and you have curly hair, this is for you. Don’t do it! Curly hair is naturally a lot drier than all other hair types. Because of this, if you’re constantly washing it and stripping it of the oils, it’s only going to dry up and break a lot easier. This brings up the shampoo debate. Yes, you need a specific type of shampoo so that your hair stays healthy. It’s best to use a mild shampoo that’s free of toxic chemicals that can strip the natural oils in your hair even more.
- Stay Moisturized
This one should be a given after the first tip. Because curly hair tends to be drier, it’s important that you take the right steps to make sure it stays nice and silky. Many hair care websites will tell you to just condition your ends but with curly hair it’s important to condition your whole head. This is going to help with dry scalp and may even tame any frizz. The conditioning step doesn’t just end with the shower. When you get out of the shower it’s best to apply oil or a leave in conditioner so that it locks in any other moisture your hair needs to stay bouncy.
- Detangle
To reduce the constant hassle of the knotty hair, it’s important you detangle it. This might not keep it from getting knotted in the future, but it might be able to help while you’re getting ready for the day. Don’t get it confused though, brushing curly hair while it’s dry is a definite no! This will do more damage than good and that’s not what we’re trying to accomplish. When you brush curly hair while it’s dry, this will make it more prone to breakage which will cause more frizz, and we know we don’t want that.
- Hair Care After Hours
If you think that taking care of your hair stops as soon as you go to bed, you’re wrong. Making sure your hair is prepared for the long night ahead of you is just as important as when you’re awake. As much as we’d like to think that we sleep completely still, that isn’t the case. You may go to bed looking like one person and wake up with a bird’s nest on top of your head.
Because of this, protective hairstyles before going to bed may be able to help with breakage and keep it from getting too frizzy in the morning. Putting your hair in a loose, high ponytail, kind of like a pineapple, or a loose braid, may keep it from rubbing on your pillowcase during the night!
